Complete your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Residential at Wold Escapes
Complete your Duke of Edinburgh’s Residential Gold Award with a course at the Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School
Once you’ve struggled across all terrains in diverse weather conditions for your Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards you then start on the ‘mountain’ which is your Gold Award… Here at Wold Escapes home to the Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School we’ve got your Gold residential award covered at least. We are an approved activity provider, and this course qualifies for The Residential Project of The Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
So, we can’t come and carry your backpack on your expedition, but we can give you some skills when you’re cooking your dinner on an evening whilst examining your blisters and drying out your clothes, and more importantly give you some future life skills.
This five-day intensive course is designed especially for those completing their residential section of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, as well as those heading off to university or college or embarking on a gap year. You will stay with us here at Wold Escapes in one of our nine bed & breakfast rooms and use the Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School kitchen to learn some impressive skills in the daytime.
What the D of E Gold residential course involves
The course is packed with recipes that are designed to be affordable for student-living while still having the ‘wow’ factor for those wanting to dazzle family or friends. Students will learn a range of different culinary techniques so they leave us with the confidence to not only create our recipes again but to adapt and create their own.
Our experienced tutors will teach you skills such as:
- Knife Skills
- Food Hygiene
- Restaurant Service Skills – always helpful if you want whilst at university
- Safety in the kitchen
- Healthy eating
- Use of leftovers and bulk cooking to save money
- A huge range of dishes will be taught from healthy breakfast options to entertaining on a budget, cake baking and perfect pastry!
The dishes you will create vary greatly and we can cover all dietary requirements, just let us know what they are when you book. The type of dishes you will be making vary from smoothies, scotch pancakes and eggs benedict to pizzas, stir fries, chicken curry and roast dinners, to fruit crumbles, profiteroles and deliciously naughty chocolate fudge cake.
Go away with a future life skills
After successfully completely the course you will leave with a Certificate of Achievement (great for applying for part time jobs as well as your CV), an extensive recipe folder to look back on and recreate your masterpieces as well as a two-week menu plan.
Wold Escapes is part of large farm and on one of the evenings you will get to go on a farm walk on the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds (weather permitting obviously – this is England after all!). On other evenings there will be an art class which always goes down really well, as well as other crafting activities and at the end of the week we hold a celebratory dinner where we can assess everything you’ve learnt during the week.
Accommodation during your stay at Wold Escapes
Our students stay onsite during the course in our bed and breakfast rooms, all with en-suite or adjoining private bathrooms. These are shared twin rooms but there is an option to have your own room subject to availability for a supplement of £100.
If you would like to stay with us the night before the course starts then we offer a discounted rate of £70 for single occupancy including a full Yorkshire breakfast the next morning. Do note however that no evening meal is provided that night as you will be regarded as one of our regular B&B guests.
Wold Escapes has plenty of outdoor space for our students to exercise. You will have use of the private footpaths around our private farmland if you want to go for a run or a walk. There is also a volley ball, badminton, giant Jenga and other games for students to play during free time.

The serious part… The D of E Policy : ‘Knowing Others on The Course’
Please note, under the rules of D of E, students may only know one other person on the course and this is subject to the approval of your D of E Leader. Friends coming together will not be able to share a room unless there are exceptional circumstances.
How much does it cost?
The price which includes your tuition, four nights’ accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as evening activities and talks is we believe reasonably priced. From the 1st April 2023 the five-day course costs £725.
The course starts at 10.30am and students will be ready to depart at 3.30pm on the last day of the course.
Our class groups are small, there will be no more than 12 in a group, so you really get to know each other well. We often hear that groups keep in touch and often meet up afterwards, especially if some are going to the same university.
Remember that although this is designed for those completing their Duke of Edinburgh award, this is not essential to take part on the course.
